VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

An elderly Lowndes County lady fell for a bait-and-switch scam, and lost $10,000 in the process.

Lowndes Co. Sheriff Chris Prine looking for a woman in connection with the theft of the money from on January 7. The victim, who is 86 years old, was shopping on Norman Drive, and was approached by the woman who identified herself as 'Julia.'

Julia told the victim that she had found a wallet containing $150,000, and asked the older lady for help finding the owner. The elderly lady took Julia, and another person, to her home so the "found money" could be placed in the victim's safe.

Julia pretended to place the "money" into the safe-- but she really took approximately $10,000.00 of the victim's money out of the safe.

"We feel that the perpetrator preyed upon the victim because of their age," said Lt. Stryde Jones with the Lowndes County Sheriff's Department.

"The victim's 86 years old, but this could happen to anybody and that's what we want to make the public aware of," Jones continued.

The suspect is a black female, possibly in her 40's. The vehicle was driven by a second person that was never seen by the victim.

Prine said criminals who carry out these scams are often convincing, and may provide believable supporting details. Anytime a person is doubt of situation, they should contact their local law enforcement to verify the information before taking any actions.

Sheriff Prine is asking that anyone with information on this case, or any other case to contact the Lowndes County Sheriff's Office at {229} 671-2950.
