CULLEN, LA (KSLA) -

Volunteer firefighters in Cullen, Louisiana will continue to serve Webster Parish District 6, after many of them threatened to resign last week over changes in leadership.

The firefighters voiced outrage last week and even turned in their equipment in protest, after learning that their current chief Charles Hile was going to be forced out without a vote by the fire district board. Hile's replacement was reportedly going to be Gary Sullivan, handed the job by appointment by the board chairman Kenneth Garrett.

At a meeting of the board Tuesday night, Garrett met with the disgruntled firefighters to discuss the need for new leadership at the Cullen station before the board appointed Assistant Chief Tommy Arnold as interim chief until a permanent replacement is named.

Now, the firefighters have picked up their gear and the threat of a walkout appears to have dissipated.

"We kind've all came together about this," says junior volunteer firefighter Matt Stewart. "We wanted our old chief to stay, but if that's what we have to do, move and get better and get more training and stuff like that then that's what we gotta do."
