Looking back at the 2013 New Orleans Saints season

Posted: Updated:
NEW ORLEANS, LA (WLOX) -

Considering what happened in 2012, the 2013 season was successful for the Saints. The return of head coach Sean Payton was a big step in rebuilding New Orleans into a contender in the NFC. His selection of Rob Ryan as the Saints defensive coordinator was probably the most impressive move he made before the start of the 2013 NFL season. Ryan's ability to revamp a defense into a feared unit was one of the best coaching jobs in the NFL this season.

Offensively quarterback Drew Brees continued his success, but at times he didn't shine as much as he had in the past. I believe the offensive line didn't provide the necessary time for Brees to set up and find his primary or secondary receivers and thus he was rushed and when a quarterback is rushed, ill-advised passes result in interceptions.

The screen pass to the running backs is no longer a game breaking play. Opposing defenses have learned to sniff out that play, especially during the tale end of the season and in the playoffs.

Payton is an offensive-minded coach and he'll use the off-season to devise a new game plan, one that will rely on tight end Jimmy Graham.

The All-Pro is one of many free agents on the Saints roster, a free agent who must be locked-up for years to come.

The Saints did clear one huddle that had eluded the New Orleans franchise since it's inception... a playoff victory on the road.

Payton will now concentrate on the upcoming NFL Draft in April trying to fill areas where he believes the Saints need some new blood.
