Academic decathlon puts students to the test

Posted: Updated:

Some South Georgia students put their brains to work Monday, competing against each other in various subjects.

Dougherty County high school students were quizzed on many areas, including science, social studies, literature and music during the annual academic decathlon.

This year's theme was the 20th century.   Students study all year long for the big day, which includes seven tests and a super quiz.

Each school has different teams and everyone gets a chance to compete.

"Everybody showed good sportsmanship, they worked hard and it was a good competition," said Cassandra Sampson, the DCSS Secondary Curriculum Coordinator.

"It was fun.  There was a lot of testing, but we had something to work for, districts," said Ed Belocura, a 10th grade student at Westover High School.

The event is sponsored by the PAGE foundation.

Albany High School was the overall high score champion.  The group goes on to compete in the state competition in March.
