House Speaker Ralston discusses goals for General Assembly

ATLANTA, GA (WALB) -

The legislative session starts Monday and state lawmakers will focus on several things including the state's budget.

Georgia House Speaker David Ralston toured Cordele's inland port Friday to see how it's boosting the economy.

The intermodal center is connected by rail to the busy and growing Port of Savannah.

Ralston says this year's assemble will be busy, and he has an aggressive schedule. He says his main focus with be balancing the budget without raising taxes.

"I think its important to remind Georgians that we do that in 40 days every year, and I think they have done one or two in Washington in 10 or 15 years, and they stay all year up there so I'm pretty proud of that," says House Speaker David Ralston

A major lingering question from last session is whether lawmakers will back a bill expanding gun rights on college campuses.

WALB will have live reports from opening day at the state capitol.
