ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

At a special called meeting of the Albany Dougherty Economic Development Commission, EDC President Ted Clem submitted his resignation.

"It's been a good run in Albany I've really fallen in love with the community, it's been home to me and my family, It's been a great time to serve with the economic development," said Ted Clem, outgoing president, Economic Development Commission.

After five years, Clem says it's time to move on.  He accepted a job as senior project manager with the business development division of the Alabama Department of Commerce. Clem says he accomplished a lot in Albany.

"January 2009 was a rough period that's when I started and it came on the hills of the announcement that cooper would be closing their plant, there were a couple of other losses in the manufacture that proceeded that, so we were facing a bit of a challenge," said Clem.

The commission named the current vice president as interim president.

"Justin Strickland was named interim after we accepted the resignation of Ted Clem as our president," said Jay Smith, Board Chairman.

The city of Albany has a new development fund, millions of dollars set aside for incentives to companies that bring at least 100 jobs to town.

Board Chairman Jay Smith hopes that will pay off and create jobs this year.

"What I think is we can stay the course with the strategic plan we established a year and a half ago, we're beginning to see the payoff with that," said Smith.

Bringing and retaining companies is extremely important for small business owners like Pong Hughes.  Her shop sells wigs and other women's accessories.

She says when the community thrives, her business thrives.

"This building I own, more business, the more people come, the more people come shopping more," said Pong Hughes, owner.

Interim president Justin Strickland, is an Albany native who graduated from Albany High School, and UGA. Clem's last day on the job is January 31st.
