ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The qualifications to earn and retain a teaching certificate in Georgia will get a lot stricter next month. Dr. Kimberly Fields is the Chair of Teacher Education at Albany State. She was part of the task force that looked at ways to improve Georgia schools.

The biggest change will require college education majors to spend more time with real students. Current teachers will partner with student teachers to give them more hands-on classroom time so they're better prepared when they do go to work in a school.

Dr. Kimberly Fields says "I think it will make a difference because as a preparation provider it does force me to take a better look at who I am sending out to work with P through 12 students and if I do have a student that needs remediation it gives me very guided feedback on what type of remediation I should be able to provide to that particular candidate."

Under the new guidelines teachers will also be rated by the success of their students every 5 years in order to renew their certificate.
