ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

When a pipe bursts inside your home, it can cost upwards of thousands of dollars in damage.

Workers with Bishop Carpet Care say the first thing you should do if a pipe does burst is remove or cover any furniture, because furniture tends to soak up a lot of water and can crack or split.

Try to contain the damage, and use foil or plastic to cover furniture.

"Well they want to protect their furniture. They don't have to worry about structural components right away. Things like carpets should stay where they are but furniture can quickly soak up water and start to split and crack," says Jud Savelle, President of Bishop Carpet Care.

Once the damage is contained be sure to contact your insurance agent.
