ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Leaders of a South Albany church cleaned up Wednesday, puzzled why someone set fire to one of their buildings early in the morning.

Just after midnight, a storage building belonging to St. Peter Missionary Baptist Church in the 1900 block of South Jackson Street burned.

Firefighters say an arsonist broke the window, could not get through burglar bars, and set the fire by reaching through the bars.

Firefighters extinguished the fire before it could do much damage. Because of repeated burglaries, the church installed the window bars last year.

"After that I thought probably we wouldn't have any problems," said Deacon Raymond Simmons. "Not with this little place here, this building here. I don't know, just seems like things just happen this time of the year."

If you have any information about this arson call CrimeSTOPPERS at 436-TIPS.
