ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

An effort to improve drainage in southeastern Dougherty County gets a boost. County commissioners unanimously approved more than $420,000 Monday to widen a canal along Holly Drive.

Since heavy rains caused severe flooding around Radium Springs in 2009, leaders have worked to improve dozens of problem areas.

"We've had some rain, not obviously like we did in 2009, but we have had heavy rains and the storm water improvements that have been implemented have worked and have reduced flooding in many areas," said County Administrator Richard Crowdis.

The public works department has completed about half the projects they identified since 2009.

Work on Holly Drive is expected to start in the coming months.
