BAINBRIDGE, GA (WALB) -

An elderly man was killed in a deadly fire over the weekend, launching an investigation into what caused the fire.

There were four people in the home at 510 West Green Street; a 15 year old, the teen's mother the mother's boyfriend, and an elderly man, when the fire began.

It started about 4:00 Saturday morning in the back bedroom.

Everyone was able to escape, except the 83-year-old man that stayed in the bedroom where the fire began.

"This time of the year with the cold weather we encourage people to take every safety precaution when using space heaters, and heating their home," said Public Safety Director Eric Miller.  "We remind people to allow a three-foot clearance for space heaters and that they shouldn't heat their home with their stove."

The state's fire marshal is looking into the cause of the fire, the results of the autopsy have not yet been released.

Fire officials say this type of occurrences happen more frequently as it gets colder, and they encourage fire safety.
