Information from Georgia Southwestern State University-

Georgia Southwestern State University recently named veteran GSW campus police officer Michael "Mike" Tracy the new director of Public Safety.

Tracy served as interim director following the death of Chief Oris Bryant, Jr. in September of 2013.

"I would like to thank Dr. Kendall Blanchard and Cody King for the opportunity to serve our university in this new capacity," Tracy said. "I am excited to see what the future holds for GSW as well as our department and look forward to working with our officers and the campus community."

Tracy came out of retirement to serve as interim director after serving for 20 years as the assistant director of Public Safety at Georgia Southwestern. In total, Tracy has been in law enforcement for 37 years.

Tracy holds Georgia Police Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification and is POST certified as a general instructor and as a firearms instructor. Since 2011, he has worked as an instructor at South Georgia Technical College's Criminal Justice Department, and he served in the same role at Columbus State University from 1993 to 2001.

A resident of Sumter County, Tracy also serves as chairman of the Sumter County Board of Elections.
