Some south Georgians lose power on cold night

TIFTON, GA (WALB) -

Despite an effort by Georgia Power to boost power generation to handle demand, some south Georgians lost power on the coldest night of the year.

About 160 customers in the College Avenue area of Tifton had no heat for a while Monday night. Crews responded quickly and had power restored by 9:30.

Georgia Power lineman Richard Yarbough blamed the problem on a system overload. "We had everybody getting home and turning on their houses and all and putting them heat strips on in their houses, and it just burned out some fuses, and we got here and changed them out for them and got the lights back on," he said.

We checked throughout the night. Georgia Power reported scattered outages statewide. The highest number we saw was about 3600 customers.
