Freezing temperatures can take its toll on your car's engine. Auto mechanics say it's important to be prepared for the winter season.

The most important things to check are your antifreeze, your battery as they tend to fail when the temperatures spike and tire pressure can decrease when it gets cold.

Turn off all accessories. This includes the heater, radio and lights when starting your car. And give your engine time to heat up so your defrost and heater works properly.

The owner of Premier Auto Works on North Slappey says "It's always a good idea to have your vehicle inspected especially when it's cold. If you're gonna be traveling on the road definitely think about an emergency kit, jumper cables, flashlight, blankets possibly depending on where you're going."

James Stalvey says you should also make sure your washer fluid is a winterized blend.
