Police: young child found safe after being left on daycare bus

SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Spartanburg Police said a young child was found safe after spending hours alone in the cold on a church bus.

Police said the mother of the 2-year-old girl called just after 7 p.m. on Friday to report that her daughter was missing.

The mother told police the girl takes the bus to and from daycare at the Cathedral Holy Spirit Bible Church every weekday morning. The mother said the girl did not return home on the bus when it returned around 4:30 p.m. Friday.

The mother said she had spent the next few hours afterward calling relatives to see if a family member had picked up the child, and she said she had tried unsuccessfully to contact the daycare.

A friend of the mother, who returned to the daycare,  told police she found the girl sitting in a seat on one of two buses parked outside the church on Pearl Street.

"They looked up and there was my little girl, right there on the bus," said the mother who did not want to be identified. "Just crying, looking out at the bus windows doing her best to get to them."

Police said the child had been left alone on the bus in the cold temperatures for over four hours, but appeared to be in good health.

Police said the mother was extremely upset and took the child to the emergency room to get checked out.

Police say charges have not yet been filed in this case because it appears to have been an accident, but the case is still being investigated.
