The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program plans to prepare more than 2,500 tax returns in 2014 for working individuals and families in the Lowcountry.

The VITA program returns nearly $3.2 million back to residents and saves them more than $400,000 in tax preparation fees.

VITA sites will begin opening Jan. 21 and all services fees are free.

Sites and times are as follows:

Beaufort Library, 311 Scott St., Beaufort,(opens  Jan. 27), Mondays: 10:30-4 p.m. and Thursdays: 1:30-7 p.m.

Bluffton Library, 120 Palmetto Way, Bluffton, (opens Jan. 27), Mondays: 2-7 p.m.

St. Helena Library, 6355 Jonathan Francis Sr Rd, St Helena, (opens Jan. 27), Mondays: 1:30-7 p.m.

SCBT, 1121 Boundary St, Beaufort, (opens Jan. 21), Tuesdays: 9 a.m.-noon

Piggly Wiggly, 1347 Ribaut Rd., Port Royal (opens Jan. 21), Tuesdays: 1-5 p.m.

United Way, Jasper County, Gray's Hwy (EMS Bldg), Ridgeland, (opens Jan. 22), Wednesdays: 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Taxpayers should bring the following to the tax preparation site:

-A complete copy of last year's return .

-All 2013 informational statements, including but not limited to: wage statements - form(s) W-2, interest and dividend statements - form(s) 1099INT and 1099DIV, mortgage interest statements - form(s) 1098, pension and social security statements - form(s) 1099R and SSA-1099, tuition payments statements - form(s) 1098-T or property tax receipt(s) for any property taxes paid in 2013.

-Information on deductions.

-Copies of Social Security Card(s).

-Bank account number and routing number to deposit your refund.

-Valid picture ID.
