ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The American Red Cross has an entire month dedicated to celebrating their blood donors.

January is National Volunteer Blood Donor Month. This month celebrates both platelets and whole blood donors. Friday is the last day the Albany Donor Center gave out T-shirts to their donors. Red Cross officials say it's important to thank blood donors for their contributions to providing blood to those in need.

"Blood and platelets are a perishable item so therefore we have to always constantly replenish these items for our hospitals to make sure they provide care for the patients," said Lena Thomas.

Red Cross officials say they have to replenish their platelet supply every five days to meet patient needs. You can make an appointment to give blood by visiting your local donation center or click here.
