ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Firefighters are urging South Georgians to think fire safety as they heat their homes during this cold spell.

Many South Georgians will use space heaters to warm their homes when the temperatures drop.

Firefighters warn that those space heaters are not designed to run non-stop.   Their electrical cords often overheat during continual use and spark fires.

"Next couple of days, with this cold snap, be sure that you unplug or turn off the space heater periodically, to allow that cord to cool off.  If not, you may have a problem," said AFD Chief James Carswell.

Firefighters also urge you not to use an extension cord to power a space heater.

They urge you to protect your home by using them cautiously.
