Cairo Piggly Wiggly robbed

CAIRO, GA (WALB) -

Cairo  Police in are looking for leads in the robbery of a Piggly Wiggly, which was caught on camera.

Two robbers held up the store and detectives hope someone will recognize the pair who struck the business just before closing time Thursday night.

Surveillance video from the store shows two masked men walk in the store around 9:00. One of them shows a gun while the other robber wearing a grey sweatshirt snags cash out of the safe.

Clearly nervous, the robber drops cash on the ground before running out of the store. None of the employees or customers was hurt. We talked with one customer who shops at Piggly Wiggly often.

She says the crime won't deter her from shopping there, but she hopes the robbers are caught.

"I sure do. We're out here trying to make a living and that's not a good thing to be doing, especially in the New Year," said customer Brenda Gant.

Detectives say the robbers are white with slender builds.   They struck the store on Highway 84 just three minutes before closing time but it's not clear if the made off in a getaway car.   Anyone with information is asked to call Cairo Police.

Detectives say they haven't seen many robberies in the area. Those crimes are prone to happen prior to the holidays but police are hopeful they will catch the pair before they strike again.

Police say they are keeping a close eye on businesses in the area following the robbery.
