VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

While Valdosta may not be quite as cold and snowy  as the North East this weekend, it will be cold and there will be snow...at least at the Valdosta-Lowndes County Public Library on Friday.

"This event started several years ago as a very small event, we had story time before hand and hot coco for the children and we came up with the idea of having snow," said Kelly Lenze, Director of the South Georgia Regional Library.

"A lot of children in this area have never seen snow before," Lenze added.

This is the 10th year the Valdosta-Lowndes County Public Library has held its 'snow day' event. And, after about an hour's worth of preparations this afternoon the grass in front of the library was covered with snow, or rather shaved ice piled up and made to look like snow.

For four year-old Shelby, this was her first encounter with snow.

"Building a snowman," Shelby said when asked what she was most looking forward to.

Her eight year-old cousin, Ethan, had encountered snow before, but he was still very excited to play in the snow.

"Very excited," Ethan said. "Making a snowball and having a snowball fight," he said when asked what he was most looking forward to.

Lenze looks forward to this day every year, too.

"I do. It's a treat for me to see the enjoyment on the kids' faces, seeing them throw snowballs for the first time, making their first snowman," said Lenze.

The ice was provided by Adel ice and was paid for by Mink Chiropractic in Valdosta.
