ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

A simple traffic stop landed the Georgia banker wanted for embezzling millions of dollars behind bars after being on the run for over a year.  But not everyone was surprised he was pulled over for a simple violation-   illegally tinted windows.

State laws vary on the degree of window tinting allowed in cars and trucks. But some say deciding to go too dark could leave a hole in your pocket.

Tinting a car's windows seem harmless enough, but using the wrong film could become a problem.

"People get window tint tickets on a regular basis," said Aerica Ridgeway, Tint Specialist.

That's just what happened to 47-year-old Aubrey Lee Price when Glynn County Sheriff's Deputies pulled him over for illegally darkened windows. The New Year's Eve stop turned into a big arrest when they discovered he was wanted for embezzling $21 Million last year.

Some window tinting specialists say illegal tinting like 15% is not a whole lot different than 35% , but it is enough to catch a cop's attention.   "I'd stay away from it.  You're gonna end up in court,"  said Ridgeway.

Georgia, like several surrounding states has a limit of 32%  for window tinting.  Florida allows 21%.  And those crossing state lines could face hefty fines for going too dark.    "It can go up to almost $300 dollars.  Yeah, they're expensive."

And getting out of the fine isn't easy.   "They've gotten a ticket.  Do they have to go to court?  Can they fight it?  You can try.  If you've bought the vehicle out of the state of Georgia you have a better chance, but usually they're gonna fine you either way it goes,"  said Ridgeway.

Officers say they regularly check illegally tinted windows, which can sometimes reveal wanted suspects like Price. Vehicles can have 35%  tinting all the way around. Trucks and SUVs are given factory tinting of 20 % on the rear windows only.

Specialists say anything darker than that makes night driving dangerous.    Tinting shops can check your windows if you don't know your vehicle's variation and make sure you meet the legal requirement.
