VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

January is national blood donor month, and volunteers with the Red Cross in Valdosta are encouraging people to take part.

The Red Cross Donor Center, located at 2517 Bemiss Road in Valdosta, is holding a donor-thon on Friday, January 3rd, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Volunteers say these events are especially important during the Winter months because of the flu season, bad weather and holidays.

"It's important for people to come in and donate blood during the Winter months because we don't see the usual donors that we're used to seeing," said Claire Bowen, a Donor Recruitment Representative at the Valdosta donor center.

"About 20% of all of our blood donations come from high school students, so when high schools are out, we don't see those high school students," Bowen added.

To further encourage people to come out to the event and donate blood, donors will entered to win gift cards, health club memberships and even cup cakes.

"We'll also be giving away T-shirts...we just want people to come out, have a good time and get those good giveaways," said Bowen.

And, of course, donate blood.

If you would like to schedule a time to donate blood at the event, call 229-241-1141, or visit www.redcrossblood.org
