(RNN) - Tens of thousands of New Year's Eve revelers in Mobile, AL, saw the giant MoonPie drop to ring in 2014.
For the sixth year running, the regional event wowed celebrants who gathered to count the seconds - and make the seconds count - until the mammoth, lighted MoonPie descended the side of the 34-story RSA Trustmark skyrise to mark the beginning of 2014.
Toward the end of the night, a spattering of rain fell on the crowd, who rocked on, undeterred.
As the MoonPie descended, a laser and fireworks show lit up the midnight sky.
"We love that people come from all over to celebrate New Year's Eve together," said Carol Hunter, president of Events Mobile Inc.
Many tasted sweet slices of Mardi Gras as a giant edible MoonPie was served up at Riverview Plaza, courtesy of Chattanooga Bakery. The marshmallow filled treat has been a treasured prize thrown from Mardi Gras floats since 1952.
To add to the Mardi Gras atmosphere, a parade featuring the best Mardi Gras floats and marching bands wound through the downtown streets Tuesday evening.
Country star Gretchen Wilson, the headline musical act, entertained the crowd with her country hits.
A host of children's activities were on tap to keep children entertained at Bienville Square, Riverview Plaza, The Museum of Mobile, the Exploreum and the Mobile Carnival Museum.
Other musical acts scheduled included opening act Latimore, Kyle and Karl, Worx and Less Than Stellar.
The festivities were televised live on about 20 Raycom stations and livestreamed on Raycom websites.
