ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Fireworks are a popular way to celebrate the New Year, but firefighters want to remind citizens that the sale and individual use of most fireworks is illegal in Georgia.

Fireworks that explode or fly through the air are illegal, but certain types of sparklers are allowed, and other non-explosive items like glow worms.

Fire officials say use sparklers with caution because they can start a fire, and if one doesn't ignite on the first try, don't try to relight it.

"The ones that are permitted, the sparklers, burn extremely hot, somewhere in the area of 1200 or 1800 degrees, so there is an extreme burn hazard there. Make sure you have direct adult supervision. it's a good idea not to let young children hold them because they have short arms and a lot of times can't hold them far enough away from their body. They do emit sparks from it," says Battalion Chief Kelly Harcrow.

He also says don't wear loose clothing while lighting sparklers, and does them with water when you dispose of them.
