VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

On Saturday, AMVET post 607 in Valdosta held its annual community Christmas party.

Dozens of local children and their families packed the AMVET post to capacity to receive presents and visit with Santa Claus.

"It's designed to ensure that the kids in the local community have a merry Christmas," said Gerald Richard, Public Relations Officer for the AMVET post.

"In some cases, this may be the only Christmas that some of the kids that attend this event may have," Richard continued.

Dozens of bicycles were raffled off, but even if the children who didn't win one still got one of the dozens of other presents that had been collected through fundraisers at the AMVET post and donated by the Valdosta Fire and Police Departments as well as local residents.

"Basically every kid gets something out of it...this is the number one event that we plan for, for the entire year; to make sure that this happens with out a doubt," Richard added.

Organizers say they collected around $5,000 worth of toys and money this year, but they need much more than that in order to help all of the children in need in the community.
