ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

We now know the cause of the stinky odor many complained about in South Albany yesterday.

Equinox Chemicals says a refrigerated container used to store the methyl mercaptan-related materials, which are food additives,  froze Wednesday night.

As workers transferred the chemical Thursday, an odor emitted from the plant and people who live near the facility on Oakridge Drive complained.

"So I just want everybody to know that it was nothing to be concerned about," said Owner Mark Grimaldi.  "[It's] nothing dangerous, and we apologize for any of the, I guess, odors that people may have smelled."

Grimaldi says Equinox is committed to being a good corporate neighbor and even has a 24-hour neighbor hotline.

The EPD checked out the odor yesterday, as well. The agency has been monitoring Equinox for the last year. Take a look at their findings here.
