ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

"About 5 two liter coke bottles to make this," Keep Albany-Dougherty Beautiful Director Judy Bowles said while holding a t-shirt.

And that's not the only thing recycled plastic can be used for, its also incorporated into carpet.

"They shredded and melted them down and made them into that," Bowles shares.

She feels re-using materials should become a habit, especially during the holidays when waste skyrockets.

Bowles continues, "We probably discard about 25 percent more than we do the rest of the year...and that's a lot."

Because Georgia is part of the carpet industry we receive over one-fourth of all the recycled plastic in the entire nation. Bowles says it's a way to keep our landfills clean while supporting our economy.

"It's important for that industry to get those materials which means we need to be recycling," Bowles said. "Because those are jobs for our Georgia citizens."

But its not just plastic that comes in by the bulk, over the last few years Keep Albany-Dougherty beautiful has collected over 500-thousand pounds of electronics.

"Literally every week in this office...its mind boggling," Bowles shares.

She hopes by raising awareness, it can make Albany a healthier place to live in.
