LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – It wasn't the Run for the Roses or even the Running of the Rodents. Thursday students at Brandeis Elementary School hosted the Run for the Roaches.

For the past several weeks a dedicated group of 5th graders have been working with the Madagascar cockroaches to get them ready for the big day.

The students named them, sheltered then and feed them.

As a science project the students built a series of mazes to be used for the race.

The event kicked off with the song "My Old Kentucky Home" and ended with the winning cockroach scattering away with a tiny garland of rose petals.
