ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

An Albany church helped more than one thousand people have a special holiday season.

Thursday, Mount Zion Baptist Church gave families in need Christmas gifts and a hot meal.  People began lining up around 7am this morning for the annual luncheon.

This year, the church partnered with Kroger and other businesses to make sure each family was sent home with a turkey and a little holiday spirit.

"People say that Albany is not a good place to live," said Pastor Daniel Simmons, Mt. Zion Baptist Church.  "That people in Albany are selfish and a lot of other negative things that people say.  But one of the good things about Albany is what you see here.  This has happened because Albany is a giving community."

Pastor Simmons said the turnout has more than doubled as the need has increased over the last four or five years.  He said organizers planned for the event all year.
