From FCC menu categories #12 – listing of each upper-level category opening in a job bank or newsletter of media trade groups whose membership includes substantial participation by women and minorities.

 

Describe Scope of Broadcasters' Participation (including names of any other sponsoring or participating organizations):

 

Using job banks of media trade groups whose membership includes substantial participation by women and minorities to promote all upper level category openings with our station. Such job banks include: hirediversity.com, diversitysearch.com, careerwomen.com, and naja.com (sponsored by the Native American Journalist Association), as well as diversity sites on the EEO1 Sources.

From FCC Menu Categories #5 – Establishment of an internship program designed to assist members of the community to acquire skills needed for broadcast employment

In conjunction with Albany State University, Valdosta State University, and Georgia Southwestern State University, WALB has established an internship program designed to assist students in acquiring skills to pursue careers in Broadcasting.

We had 3 interns; 1 from Albany State University, 1 intern from Valdosta State University, and 1 from Georgia Southwestern State University.

Describe Scope of Broadcasters' Participation (including names of any other sponsoring or participating organizations):

 

Participated in and was a sponsor of the Grady School of Mass Communications and the GAB UAG Journalism & Mass Communications Career Day at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education at the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia. WALB contributes financially to the Job Fair in addition to having participation by station personnel who have substantial responsibility for making hiring decisions.

WALB participated in a Turner Job Corps Job Shadow Day. Karla Heath-Sands, Morning Anchor, hosted a student who "shadowed" her for three hours and showed the student hows and ways of her job.

Describe Nature of Initiative:

 

From FCC Menu Category #7 – Participate in broadcast career scholarship programs (including solicitation, screening, and selection of scholarship recipients).

 

Describe Scope of Broadcasters' Participation (including names of any other sponsoring or participating organizations):

 

WALB contributed toward the E. Lanier Finch Scholarship sponsored by the Georgia Association of Broadcasters, ran the spots promoting the scholarship program, and participated in the selection process among 3 applicants.

Applicants were judged upon their application and the ballot was sent to Program Director. The PSA announcements were provided by the GAB for this Scholarship.

 

Names of Station Personnel involved in Initiative:

VP and General Manager, Jim Wilcox, judged the applicants and sent in the ballot, and Don Norman, Marketing Manager, entered orders for the PSA's.

From FCC Menu Category #14 – Providing training to management level personnel as to methods of ensuring equal employment opportunity and prevent discrimination.

 

 

Describe Scope of Broadcasters' Participation (including names of any other sponsoring or participating organizations):

 

WALB Department Heads and hiring managers participated in a Webinar on "Labor & Employment Law – From a Different Angle"" over the course of two days. The power point presentation was given by Frank Carlisle & hosted by Susan Willower, Raycom Media Director of Human Resources.  All participating Personnel were given the chance to ask questions.

From FCC Menu Category #4 – Event sponsored by groups interested in broadcast employment issues.

 

Describe Scope of Broadcasters' Participation (including names of any other sponsoring or participating organizations):

WALB participated in a "Hiring our Heroes" hiring fair, s sponsored by the University of Phoenix, and conducted by the US Chamber of Commerce. WALB also participated in workshops that focused on skills to help our military veterans successfully find job in broadcasting as well as other jobs.
