KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

An adult entertainment business is being sued after a Kansas City man's family claims he died after buying a male enhancement product.

The lawsuit was filed back in August, but it now coming to light after the parent company of Erotic City, Enlightened Reading Inc, responded to it and denied any wrongdoing.

According to the lawsuit filed by the mother of David McElwee's minor children, McElwee bought the male-enhancement product called Stiff Nights from the Kansas City adult bookstore on Sept. 22, 2012.

McElwee took the product and later died of cardiac arrest. His children's mother claims the increased blood pressure and heart attack the 37-year-old suffered was directly linked to the product.

"This is medication that should be prescribed by a physician," said Johnson County EMS medical director Dr. Ryan Jacobsen.

Jacobsen did not treat McElwee, but he isn't surprised at the claims being leveled against the product McElwee reportedly took.

The pills' manufacturers, Nevada-based NovaCare LLC and Impulsaria LLC, issued a voluntary recall back in July after the product was found to contain sulfoaildenafil, an ingredient used in Viagra.

"Anytime you don't have medication or a supplement that is marketed or monitored by the FDA, you run the risk of having these adverse drug reactions. It is very hard to tell what is in those medication and supplements," Jacobsen said.

KCTV5 contacted Erotic City for a comment and was told that the owner was not available for comment. In court documents, lawyers for the business denied any wrongdoing.

Attorneys for McElwee's family also declined comment.

Lawyers for the family say the reason they wouldn't comment is because they are awaiting a response for the lawsuit from NovaCare.

KCTV5 also reached out to them and are waiting to hear back.
