AIKEN, SC (WFXG) -

An Aiken teacher is behind bars after police said he had an unlawful, physical relationship with a student.

Michael Paul Waters, 41, faces five counts of sexual battery with a student.

The Aiken Dept. of Public Safety said in a news release that Waters was employed as a coach and teacher at South Aiken High School.

Lt. Jake Mahoney said the alleged incidents occurred both on and off campus.

A parent WFXG spoke with near the school said she doesn't believe the allegations, and that Waters is a family man.

His page within the school website reads:

The students here call me Coach Waters. I have been teaching Economics and Geography here at South Aiken going on 11 years now. I enjoy teaching young people in hopes of one day making a difference in their lives. I LOVE coaching and I am a sports fanatic.

WFXG also reached out to school officials, but we still haven't heard back.

Mahoney said the school has been cooperative during the investigation, which is still ongoing.
