NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

The Nashville Zoo announced the birth of a female giraffe Tuesday. The Masai calf was born Dec. 13 in the zoo's giraffe barn.

At the time of its birth, the baby giraffe stood 6'5" and weighed 180 pounds, and the zoo says both baby and mother, Margarita, are doing well.

The pair will remain off exhibit for monitoring for the next 60 days.

This is the third calf born to Margarita, whose second calf - another female - was born in 2012 and recently moved to join a permanent herd at the zoo in Columbus, OH.

Pregnancy for giraffes lasts about a year, and the calves are born standing up.

"We've been tracking Margarita's pregnancy for about a year and estimated her due date to be in early December," said lead giraffe keeper Kate Cortelyou, in a press release. "I arrived at the giraffe barn around 7:30 a.m. [on Dec. 13] to find a dry, healthy, standing baby giraffe, which is the perfect way to find them. We are so thrilled about the latest addition to our herd."

With the addition of the calf, the Nashville Zoo's 1 1/2 acre Giraffe Savannah, which opened in April 2006, is home to three Masai giraffe and one reticulated giraffe.
