Citizens: County should revisit Phoebe Putney relationship

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Some Dougherty County residents say recent appointments to the Hospital Board authority is negatively impacting healthcare in southwest Georgia.

Several citizens accused Dougherty County Commissioners of ignoring Phoebe's business practices, which they say have developed a monopoly in healthcare in the region.

This same idea led the Federal Trade Commission to challenge Phoebe's takeover of the former Palmyra Hospital, which finally ended in an agreement with the FTC after several court hearings.

Residents said that leaders need to reevaluate the county's relationship with the hospital to improve care as the costs of treatment continue to increase. We'll bring you more from residents and from commissioners later tonight on WALB.

Also during the meeting, the Albany-Dougherty Drug Unit reported a three fold increase in methamphetamines in the region over the last year.

Commander Bill Berry said officers are losing a war against the drugs, which he said lead to other crimes like theft or prostitution among addicts hoping to support their habit.

He said meth is a growing problem that at could be the next epidemic in Albany and Dougherty County.
