Thousands receive food baskets from Albany church

Hundreds of people lined up as early as 5 a.m. Saturday along Lumpkin Street for a food giveaway.

It's a tradition for members of the First Apostolic Church in Albany to help residents of the Good Life City each December.

Doors opened at 8 a.m., and families were given boxes of food that included turkeys, vegetables, beans, plus pies and cakes.

"The bible says, he that lend to the poor, lend to the Lord. So that's the way it is," said Lillie Thomas.

"One family told me lately that the food that we gave them was the last food they were going to have. So it's a pleasure and then you're obeying the great commandment of the Lord," said Bishop Betty Johnson.

Church members were able to provide more than a thousand people with free meals.
