Sumter Co. Schools ask judge to decide on 2012 board elections

The Sumter County School Board wants a judge to decide to how to proceed holding 2012 school board elections.

School Board attorney Maurice King says the board voted last night to ask a judge to determine when the 2012 elections should be held and how they should be run.

"Of course they are going to have to set the election schedule, they are going to have to set up what's the qualifying period," said Maurice King, Sumter County School Board Attorney.

The 2012 elections were postponed last year due to a court case that was dismissed earlier this year.

King says one of biggest issues in holding elections will be deciding which current board members can run in each districts.

A federal judge ruled this year a redistricting plan passed by the legislature in 2011 is now legal.

The new plan cuts the number of seats on the board from 9 to 7.
