OCILLA, GA (WALB) -

A fire at the home of an Ocilla firefighter, that fire crews thought was extinguished, flared up and burned the home to the ground. It destroyed what few belongings the family could have salvaged.

A grease fire started about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in Captain Kenneth Hendley's home on Highway 32. Nine people got out safely, but three dogs and two birds died.

In the middle of the night, a hot spot flared up. When firefighters got there about 3:30 a.m., it was too dangerous to do much to fight it.

We're told people in the community came by the fire department throughout the day Wednesday to donate clothes and money to the family.
