It may not be the trip to Pasadena lots of Alabama fans were hoping for, but many people in the travel business say the Sugar Bowl and New Orleans are glad to see Alabama bound for the Big Easy. With tickets and travel packages now available for the January 2 Sugar Bowl, fans are starting to make plans for a trip to New Orleans.
"New Orleans is such a fun city, and I think Alabama has always had fun in that city," Ashley Clayton, travel coordinator for the UA Alumni Association, said. "Every person I talk to who is from New Orleans and involved in the bowl in some aspect says, 'Man, Alabama always travels really well.' And we do."
Clayton says New Orleans draws many Alabama fans because of the relatively short distance. "A lot of people will make that trek who wouldn't otherwise go somewhere else," Clayton said.
According to The University of Alabama's athletics web site, public sale of any available ticket inventory from UA begins Wednesday, December 11 at 8 a.m. UA's deadline for priority ticket groups, like Tide Pride members and faculty/staff, was December 10. The Sugar Bowl's web site also offers tickets.
Many travel organizations are also offering special packages for Alabama fans. Some of those include tickets and amenities like transportation in New Orleans and fan events. The University of Alabama's Alumni Association is one group offering travel packages. Some of the Alumni Association's packages include New Year's Eve in New Orleans.
"I know a lot of people have Sugar Bowl tickets or a package for New Year's Eve on their wish list for Santa," Clayton said.
Alabama will face the University of Oklahoma in the AllState Sugar Bowl in the Superdome. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. on January 2.
