COLLINS, MS (WDAM) -

A patriotic Sumrall woman has given dozens of early Christmas gifts to deserving veterans at the State Veterans Home in Collins.

Mary Cardinal and some friends hand-delivered about 100 afghan blankets to veterans at the facility Tuesday afternoon.

Cardinal crocheted most of them herself and worked on the project for about one year as a way of giving back to veterans.

"They need to know that there are people out here that do appreciate what they do and that's my goal," she said.

"It's wonderful, it's wonderful," said Samuel Nelson, one of the veterans who served in the Army for 21 years. "And I love the blanket and I love them for coming through and everything and still remembering us veterans," he said.

"Well, it's got to come from (Cardinal's) heart, I'll tell you that," said J.W. Strickland, another veteran at the home who served in the Navy for three years. "And she loves to do things for people or she wouldn't do it," he said.

Cardinal has also crocheted blankets for Lamar County deputies and local firefighters.
