ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

All month long officials at the Dougherty County Health Department are pushing education of HIV and AIDS, they feel it is the key that will help cut down on transmission.

According to the Georgia Department of Public Health, 1 out of every 5 people who have HIV do not know they are HIV positive.   The Georgia Department of Public Health says there 46,000 cases of HIV in the state.

The month of December is dedicated to increasing awareness of HIV and AIDS.

Zanora Sanders of the Dougherty County Health Department says their task is to remove the stigma and provide a comfortable learning environment for not only adults but youth as well. Sanders feels treatment is just as important as prevention, if a person does happen to contract the disease she wants them to know there are ways to help improve their lifestyle and ensure to have a longer life span.

"But now medical advancement has been made and greater education is out there, so the earlier you're tested, the greater your chances are of staying ahead of the virus," Sanders said.

Out of 18 health districts in Georgia, Dekalb and Fulton were ranked with the highest number of people living with HIV and stage 3 AIDS in 2012.

If you're interested in getting tested, you can call and set up an appointment at your local health district, they provide free confidential testing with results in 20 minutes or less.
