WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – New Hanover County Board of Commissioners Chairman Woody White once again called for fellow commissioner Brian Berger to step down, days after another arrest.

Speaking at the end of the last commission meeting of the year, White said it's "obviously  a tough time in his life."  Berger was charged last week with DWI, impeding traffic and possession of schedule II drugs.

"Our thoughts are with Commissioner Berger in what is obviously a tough time in his life," Commissioner Woody White said. "And, while we hope he is doing ok and we hope he is seeking help, we also would like to strongly encourage him to reconsider resignation. And short of that, we hope that he will stay off of our local roadways when he's….his capacity to drive is not there.  It's a dangerous situation what we think transpired last week. We've done an awful lot as a board this year to address some of these concerns. We are continuing to keep the security measures in place at our public meetings. We are continuing to monitor and ensure the staff in our county buildings are equally protected with the requirement that he be escorted by a sheriff's deputy when he comes there.  A requirement by the way he has ignored once and we hope he won't do anymore. But we wish him well and will repeat what myself and other commissioners offered 6 months ago, which is that anytime he wants our help all he has to do is ask for it. We don't condone the choices he makes, but we are fellow human beings and we are here to help him if he asks us. "

Berger did not attend Monday afternoon's meeting.

Commissioners removed Berger from the board earlier this year, only to have him return to the role after a judge ruled the process was handled incorrectly.
