TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC) -

The Tuscaloosa County Park and Recreation Authority says the West Alabama Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting will happen Monday night in downtown Tuscaloosa, rain or shine.

This year will mark the 38th year for the event, which is free and open to the public. The tree lighting is set for 5:15 p.m. on the lawn of the Tuscaloosa County Courthouse on Greensboro Avenue. The parade will kick off at 6:30 p.m.

The parade route begins on Greensboro Ave. at 11th Street, travels east to University Blvd., turns north and ends at the corner of University Blvd. and 19th Ave.

This year's tree is the largest ever, at about 60 feet. The tree is from the Flatwoods community in Northport.

"It is a Leland Cypress, which makes a beautiful large tree," Becky Booker, PARA Public Relations & Marketing Manager, said.

"There are about 500 of the large ornaments, the bells and balls, that are on the tree. Almost 700 lights, which are the really big industrial lights," Booker said.

This year's parade grand marshals are Davis "Buddy" Burton and Fitzgerald Washington. Burton has served 35 years as a girls' softball coach with PARA. He is also active in the community and a survivor of the April 27, 2011, tornado. Washington is general sales manager for Buffalo Rock Pepsi and is an involved civic leader.

Retired Tuscaloosa County Public Defender Bobby Wooldridge will serve as master of ceremonies for the tree lighting.

Parking will be available at the city's Intermodal Facility parking deck, located at the corner of 7th Street and 22 Avenue and also along the parade route.
