Icy Conditions For Some, Just A Cold Rain For Others

The Upstate is in store for a raw and cold Sunday with rainy and breezy conditions while Icy conditions will develop over portions of Western North Carolina Sunday. A Freezing Rain Advisory is in effect from midnight through 8 PM Sunday for Yancey, Buncombe Henderson, Eastern McDowell and the mountainous areas of Rutherford and Polk Counties of North Carolina. These areas could see some minor travel issues on the roads especially on the bridges and overpasses. Be careful driving in these area during the first half of Sunday. Ice accumulations should be less than a quarter of an inch in these counties.

The heaviest ice accumulations will be from just north and northeast of Asheville along the eastern slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains. An Ice Storm Warning is in effect from Midnight through 8 PM Sunday for Avery and Mitchell Counties as well as the mountainous portions of McDowell County in North Carolina. Here rain and freezing rain will develop overnight eventually changing to all freezing rain during the morning and into the early to middle afternoon.  Because of this, damaging accumulations of ice around a quarter of an inch are expected to develop producing some power outages and dangerous driving conditions.

Otherwise, overnight skies will be cloudy with temperatures dropping into the upper 30s in the Upstate and lower 30s in the mountains.  Late tonight moisture will move into the area and will fall as rain across the Upstate but as rain and freezing rain in the mountains. This will continue through the day on Sunday with temperatures not climbing out of the 30s.   The wet weather will continue into the early part of next week.  FOX Carolina Meteorologist Mark Johnson will have the complete outlook at 10 PM.
