CORDELE, GA (WALB) -

A man who has served Crisp County for decades is honored with a day named after him.

Sheriff Donnie Haralson is ill. He's not able to go into work much, but people around the community are expressing their appreciation for all the work he's done for Crisp County over the years.

If you look around Cordele and Crisp County, you'll see signs honoring their beloved Sheriff Donnie Haralson. His friends says it's time for him to have a day of his own.

"He's been sheriff for over 26 years so that right there lets you  know that the community supports him and loves him," said Monica Simmons.

Sheriff Haralson has been battling brain cancer for some time and businesses like the Ramada Hotel are displaying their support for him and his family.

"We been running support messages for the sheriff for quite some time and when they told us today was going to be the sheriff day, we decided to participate and we're going to run that all day," said David Herlovich, Ramada Inn Manager.

Herlovich says his sign is sending a message to everyone who passes by.

"I just want to remind everybody to keep the Sheriff in your prayers, cause he does need them  and just know that if there is anything we can do for him he could reach out to us," said David Herlovich.

Monica Simmons at the chamber says the sheriff is staying busy, working from home. She says he's humbled by the support he's received.

"He's been our sheriff. He's the high sheriff here. He's a great friend, great leader and he's also serve the state," said Monica Simmons.

The city also named the sheriff as the Grand Marshal in Friday Christmas parade.

Sheriff Haralson's family will stand in for him in the parade.
