VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

If it wasn't already, the holiday season is now officially underway in Valdosta.

Residents gathered at the steps of city hall on Wednesday evening to listen to children sing Christmas carols and to watch the annual lighting of the city's Christmas tree.

"It's the start of our Christmas season," said Valdosta Mayor John Gayle.

Before flipping the switch to light the tree, Gayle gave a speech to commemorate the event. He took time to recognize city employees for the job they do and also recognized several children from Moody Air Force Base who have parents that are deployed over seas.

Afterwards, Gayle said that's what this ceremony is all about.

"It's a time when we acknowledge our employees and all of our staff and thank them for the job that they do," said Gayle.

"I think [this ceremony] is very important. You see what it means to the kids, and so we have to keep it going for them," Gayle added.

The city will hold it's annual Christmas parade on Saturday.
