ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

A Darton State College music program is launching a $1 Million fundraising effort to join an exclusive list of colleges around the world.

The Darton State Foundation just kicked off an All-Steinway piano initiative. The goal is to replace the school's worn out instruments with 22 top quality pianos.

Performing Arts Director Dr. Claire Fox Hillard  said Darton would become one of only 600 colleges in the world to have an All-Steinway designation.

"It's kind of like the benchmark for which pianos are measured," he said.  "You know, there's some that are specialty brands above, there's lots below, but the chief hallmark is that they're all hand made and there's a long tradition going back many generations."

Hilliard said the initiative could attract more students to Darton. He hopes to reach the fundraising goal in a year.

Donations can be made to the Darton College Foundation Fund.  Call (229) 317-6000, or visit http://www.dartonfoundation.org/ for more information on how you can donate.
