ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Some Dougherty County kids will soon have new equipment to play on in an area park.

Commissioners unanimously approved roughly $22,600 for new playground equipment at Robert Cross Park Monday.

It's one of two projects expected to give the space a facelift next year. Commissioners say they'll soon begin accepting bids for a multipurpose facility for weddings, reunions and other social functions they hope will further enhance the park.

"Because we have so much traffic out there, so much visitation, it made sense to improve, to upgrade, to enlarge the area. It's just a wonderful place. We're glad we'll be able to provide that quality of life venue for our citizens," said Dougherty County Commissioner John Hayes.

Hayes said the purchase will include new slides, swings and other equipment to replace older play sets. He said it should be installed within the next 30-60 days.

Hayes said he hopes to begin groundbreaking for the multipurpose facility by spring 2014.
