CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Students at Notre Dame High School are showing the true meaning of the holiday season by making more than 250 blankets for kids at the Children's Hospital.

The project was student-led. One athlete from each sports team led the project for their sport and two senior students spearheaded the entire project. Taylor Feeney and Blake Hagedorn say they were passionate about the project because of what it means for the children who receive the blankets.

"It's just such an overwhelming pride that we can be in charge of something this wonderful and this magical and that affects so many people and that a small school can affect so many little kids," Fenney said. "In total we have 258, so we had almost 100 percent participation from every team."

These young leaders say this project shows the heart of the athletes at Notre Dame.

"It shows that we truly care," Hagedorn said. "Sports have had a huge impact on all of our lives and we just wanted to make these for the kids that are in the hospital so that when they get this it means something to them, that people actually did this personally."

"I think it really means that we are loving and that we care about the kids at the hospital that need the blankets when they get done with surgery and that we care so much about everyone," Fenney said.

Coaches say they plan to take a small group of student athletes with them when they deliver the blankets to the hospital.

"I'm sure they're excited and they are happy and they feel like it's personal to them, like they are needed and that they are loved," Fenney said. "I can't even imagine how good of a feeling it is."

"Christmas is about giving and this is what we did, making all these blankets, the smiles on their faces are going to be great when they get them," Hagedorn said.

The blankets are made with all different designs. The students say they hope the children get a design they love.

"I had baseballs and Cardinals on the other side," Hagedorn said. "I hope he is a huge Cardinals fan and a baseball athlete and I hope he really enjoys it."
