ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The holidays are quickly approaching, and law enforcement agencies in Albany and Dougherty County want to remind citizens to be safe. Saturday, law enforcers met with citizens to give them some holiday safety tips.

"Folks don't realize that too often there are people that are watching them, they are watching their actions. The need to be aware of what's going on around them," said Chief Proctor, Albany Police Department.

Resident Stephanie Byrd says she learned a lot during today's presentation.

"When they were talking about  how to secure the home if you're going to be away and shopping tips," said Stephanie Byrd.

Law enforcers say its important to park in well lit areas, lock your doors, and only use one card while shopping. Byrd says she learned more about how to avoid scams.

"I asked the question about  should I use a prepaid card versus a credit card or debit card. I asked that question because the information is not traced back to me. But I was advised  to use the credit verses the prepaid card," said Stephanie Byrd.

Law enforcers plan to be out in full force this holiday season.

"What we're going to do is have beefed up patrols, starting this weekend though January 4, they'll be at all the major shopping areas. As well as the neighborhoods, we're not going to leave out any area. We going to bring on extra people to do this," said Chief Proctor.

It's important to shop in pairs, and before dark if possible. Police also urge citizens to call 911 if you see suspicious activity.
