Teacher receives JC Penney grant

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

A Dougherty County elementary school teacher has money for classroom supplies  thanks to generous South Georgians.

People who donated their change at J. C. Penney provided a $400 grant for a third grade teacher. The store manager awarded the grant to Lincoln Magnet School teacher Kanese Rachel as her students watched.

J. C. Penney asks people to donate their change to support a different charity each month.      The August donations went to Adopt A Classroom dot org, which selected Rachel's class to receive the money.

"I want to incorporate more manipulatives in the classroom.  Hands on activities for them to do in class," said Kanese Rachel, a Lincoln Elementary Teacher.

"You know a teacher spends anywhere from $800 to $1200 a year of their own money.  So to be able to get some funding to help on a day to day basis, I think goes a long way," said J. C. Penney Store Manager Joe Iles.

Rachel, who teaches Reading language arts, said she was shocked to learn she was selected because she entered through Adopt a classroom dot org last year.
